Breathable & Organic Mattresses

Breathable Crib Mattress:

So what exactly is a breathable mattress, and is it important to buy one? Consumer Reports has stated that some baby gear companies now offer "breathable" mattresses, claiming they promote safe sleep by reducing the risk of suffocation and overheating. These mattresses are also said to prevent "rebreathing," where a baby inhales their own carbon dioxide, which is hypothesized to contribute to SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome).

However, Consumer Reports states that the according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), there is no definitive evidence linking rebreathing to SIDS or that "breathable" mattresses can prevent it. Still, there's no harm in purchasing one if it is firm and fits snugly in the crib. Ensure you use a waterproof mattress cover to prevent mold, mildew, and other harmful microbes from accumulating.

 Organic, Natural, and Other Labels

The Department of Agriculture regulates the term "organic," requiring a mattress with an "organic" seal to be made of at least 95 percent organic material. However, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) does not regulate this term, meaning there are no specific guidelines for crib mattresses beyond the general USDA regulations.

Crib mattresses must meet specific safety standards, including limits on phthalate and lead content. For additional safety certifications, consider looking for one of the following:

Greenguard Gold sets emission limits and conducts corresponding tests.

CertiPUR-US establishes and tests standards for formaldehyde, heavy metals, and volatile organic compounds (VOC) emissions.

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) "organic" label requires at least 95% certified organic materials in a crib mattress and bans compounds like phthalates and chemical flame retardants.

The Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) certifies that crib mattresses contain 95% organic latex rubber sap from certified organic rubber trees.
